Did you know that any product we put onto our skin is absorbed within 26 seconds? Once absorbed, those products make their way into our bloodstream.
It is critically important to be meticulous when it comes to reading skin care product labels. But with ingredient lists spanning 50-60 ingredients per product in some cases, how is the average person supposed to decipher what’s safe to use and what’s not? After many years of research and learning the hard way sometimes, I finally have the solution to that problem, my friends.
The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Healthy Living app can help you determine if a skin care product is safe or toxic. In the “about” tab on the app, they say: “From food to shampoo – we are exposed to chemicals every second, yet we know very little about them.” Their app provides health and safety ratings for over 200,000 food and cosmetic products. You can look them up with the app or scan product bar codes. The ratings are 1 – 10 (1 being the best and 10 being the worst). Additionally, you can also check the ratings of household products as well (see my house cleaning post for more).

When I choose skin care products, there are definitely ingredients to stay away from. This is a great list of ingredients to avoid broken down by age group. I’ve said it many times before, but the EWG is a great resource. The information is at your fingertips, so you can make healthier more informed decisions for your loved ones. Gone are the days of doing hours of research and staring at product labels for hours still feeling confused.

I’ve linked everything above (except BeautyCounter) directly to Amazon, but I do purchase a lot from Thrive Market. If you haven’t heard, Thrive Market is an online retailer that reminds me a lot of Whole Foods at Costco prices. I have been a member for 2 years now and place one order every 1-2 weeks. By using this link you can get 25% off your first order and a free 30-day trial! So far I’ve saved $1,632.77 with my membership!
Have you used any of the products or brands on the list above? I would love to hear your feedback on any of them in the comments below!
